Context

The negotiations were preceded by three months of intensive Band meetings to create an agreement that would give parents from various Bands in the area real control over the education of their children at St. Mary's Catholic School in Agassiz, British Columbia. The agreement was brought to the negotiating table by Bill Mussell, Denise Douglas, Christine Pettis, Bertha Peters, Carol McIntyre, Mary Lou Andrew and Wayne Bob. Also at the negotiating table was the School Board and the Department of Indian Affairs (DIA). The negotiations were successful and an agreement was reached that set a precedent. This was the first time a group of parents from various Bands in the Lower Mainland had a say about their children's education and specifically about a school's curriculum, teachers, discipline and use of capital funds
