- Item is a photograph of the western bank fishway at Hell's Gate in British Columbia. The photo is a snapshot of the Fraser River and the fishway, which is a fish bypass tunnel that was constructed to aid upstream salmon migration. Construction of the fishway, which began in the mid 1940s, was initiated because of the perennial problems of low water levels and sediment blockage which were making it very difficult for fish to migrate through the passage.
