- Item is a photograph of the Anaconda Company in Montana (U.S.A.). The photo is a snapshot of the company's mining operations showing a tall stack that was designed to discharge exhaust gases from the smelter. The Anaconda Company, which began its mining venture in 1884, was involved in copper smelting for almost a century until it closed in 1980. The Anaconda Company, which is a subsidiary of Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) and is one of the largest mining companies in America, produces copper, aluminum, silver, and also uranium. Anaconda's first copper mine and smelter, however, was established in Montana.
