B.C. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) and Union of BC Indian Chiefs Joint Committee Meetings
- Title
- B.C. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) and Union of BC Indian Chiefs Joint Committee Meetings
- Description
- In 1978, the B.C. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) drafted two resolutions calling for tighter restrictions on Indian fishing. UBCIC President George Manuel expressed concern over these resolutions, and the BCWF responded by inviting him to their Annual Convention to address his concerns. George Manuel argued that First Nation peoples have never surrendered their land or resources, and that they have retained their Aboriginal rights to harvest resources. The BCWF draft resolutions were tabled by a near unanimous vote and were not examined for a year, allowing for a joint committee of UBCIC and BCWF to work together in developing a more acceptable solution.
