How to Use
Browsing
Within any collection site, users can search, filter, bookmark, tag, and view the available items.
When viewing an item, it may have both an area to view or the read file as well as metadata. Metadata will describe basic facts about the item, such as the date, contributors, and type of item. For some metadata, a user can click on the property and view other items that have that same property. Items can also be inside of one or more item sets.
Our digital collections platform is built on the Omeka S software, see their full user guide for information about the software.
Multiple or single items can be bookmarked by selecting
Bookmark. Selections are retrievable via the dashboard and as a list under the bookmark tag.
Bookmarked items are saved to patrons accounts when they are logged in. Guest bookmarks are saved as cookies on their local machine.
Contributing
We encourge individuals to contribute to the collection, or provide any additional information they may have to existing items. If you have any further questions about contributing, you may contact the site administrator at [email protected].
Anything that a patron chooses to provide to the sites is licensed, by default under CC BY-SA, and can be revoked in the future. Any tags, contributions, transcriptions or comments should be in the spirit of UBCIC's mandate and the Library and Archives ethical research policy.
We encourage individuals to contribute images to be included in in our digital collections. Photographs can be submitted via the Contribute option in the services tag, which will then be reviewed by staff and uploaded to the collection.
Submitters must hold clear copyright or have specific permission to freely distribute the images they upload. Images that are clearly in the public domain may also be submitted.
Patrons can complete, extend, modify, or edit information about photographs using the 'contribute' function. The contribute function is intended to support the collection and community by allowing patrons to credit people, places and communities who may be part of the resource but who were not known by staff. The contribute options is also intended to recognize the knowledge that all visitors to the sites bring to the materials.
Tags are intended for patrons to support other patrons and community members in learning about photographs. Tags can be used show relationships, themes, subjects, context, and other details that a user may know about the image from their life, community or research.
By suggesting a tag, you are agreeing to make it freely available under under the licence CC BY-SA. Tag authors are publicly anonymous by default. UBCIC Library and Archives staff reserve the right to remove or modify tags as needed. Upon submission of a new tag (rather than applying an existing tag), a staff member will need to manually accept it.
